This note of liberty was sounded in the Jewish commonwealth, on the year of jubilee, fifteen hundred years before Christ: "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." Lev. 25: 10. Eight hundred years thereafter Isaiah repeated this principle: "The Lord hath sent me to proclaim liberty to the captive, and opening of the prison to them that are bound." Isa. 61:1. Jesus indorsed this message seven hundred years later when He quoted it and said: "This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears." Luke 4:21. and added, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free; and if the Son shall make you free ye shall be free indeed." John 8: 32, 36. A Roman jurist said, "By natural right all men are born free." The Declaration of Independence says: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And Article XIII of the Constistitution declares that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Religious Liberty, therefore, rests on natural right, Scriptural authority, and the law of states. 1.
